Every meaningful relationship begins with a foundation, and our relationship with God is no exception.
This fall, Pastor Philip will lead Desert Chapel United Methodist Church through Building Blocks for a Relationship with God, a sermon series exploring the essential elements of spiritual connection. Rooted in scripture and the understanding that faith is both personal and communal, the series begins with a powerful reminder: our relationship with God starts not with what we do, but with God’s invitation to belong. Through His grace, we are welcomed into a relationship that extends beyond ourselves and into a community called to love, encourage, and grow together.
Using the familiar imagery of construction, Pastor Philip will explore the foundational principles of Belonging, Trust, Communication, and Accountability, with Vulnerability identified as the five building block. These interconnected themes encourage reflection on what it means to take God at His word, communicate through honest prayer and attentive listening, and embrace accountability as an expression of love rather than punishment. The series also considers the importance of approaching God with openness, recognizing that faith does not require us to conceal our questions, struggles, or imperfections. As Pastor Philip’s proposed message beautifully captures:
“We do not build a relationship with God to earn His love. We build upon the foundation of knowing that His love has already welcomed us in.” — Pastor Philip
At its heart, Building Blocks for a Relationship with God explores a fundamental truth: faith is not a finished structure, but an ongoing process of becoming. Each element contributes to a stronger spiritual foundation while reminding us that our relationship with God is inseparable from how we care for one another.
Through Pastor Philip’s exploration of these biblical principles, the series provides an opportunity to reflect on the foundations of our individual faith journeys and the ways trust, communication, grace, and loving accountability shape the community we continue to build together. After all, the strongest relationships are not built in isolation, but through connection, commitment, and a shared willingness to grow.
